Guatemala is a beautiful country with ugly problems: chronic poverty, drought, deficient schooling, a high rate of domestic violence and sexual abuse. A disheartening number of children of all ages are orphaned, abandoned and malnourished. Many are street children who are killed by gangs, drive-by shootings and even by so-called security forces. Some of them are tortured and sold into bondage. Many are severely handicapped. A large percentage of them are too old to be attractive for adoption. Their prospects for a normal life are nil. Many are simply abandoned and left to die alone. Others — the lucky ones — reach Mami Leo's.
"Mami Leo's" is the local name for Misioneros Del Camino. Here, we take into our Home as many of these lost children of Guatemala as finances will allow. They are often near death, dehydrated and in need of blood transfusions. We provide these children with a healthy environment in which to grow. We give them food, clothing, a place to live, medical care, education. And most important of all, we give them love. This breaks the cycle of ignorance, poverty and abuse and prepares them to become productive citizens of society.
